Hey everyone.

We’ve been working hard for the past weeks to bring you the best possible off-road experience with Ride Colibri M22, and I’m thrilled to show you the latest version of the Theta, complete with off-road tires and sleek mudguards. Watch the production update video here.

The yellow accent color really makes this bike pop, and we’ve made a small change for the production version – the struts will now be painted in the same color as the headlight cowl, giving the bike an even more cohesive look.

You might also notice the cool paint accents on the brake caliper holders, both on the front and rear. It’s all about the details, right?

Now, I’ve got some great news to share with you. Our factory has been buzzing with activity, and we’ve already built over 20 Ride Colibri M22! We’re just waiting for the final box and pallet specifications, and then we’ll start shipping these beauties out to our eagerly waiting customers.

But wait, there’s more! In just two weeks, we’ll be showcasing the Theta prototype, along with our production, pre-production, and early prototype models at the Romanian Tech Week in Bucharest. If you’re in the area, make sure to stop by and say hello. Even better, you’ll have the chance to test ride the motorcycle and ask us any questions you might have. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this opportunity!

I can’t wait to see you all there and share in the excitement of the Colibri journey. Until then, keep riding, stay safe, and get ready for the next chapter in the Colibri story!

Cheers,
Petre

Electric commuter motorcycles make traveling to work, across town, and back home a quick, fun, and much more efficient experience.

Need a bike that can handle everything from the longest commutes to the most congested city streets?

Here are our top 6 picks for the best electric commuter motorcycles on the market—all of which come with price tags to fit every budget. These bikes are equipped with great city ranges, enough power to spring through traffic, and all the features you need to make your commute as easy as possible.

Best Electric Commuter Motorcycles for the Urban Rider

6. Zero Motorcycles FXE

Zero Motorcycles FXE

CITY RANGE: 169 KM
TOP SPEED: 137 KM/H
PEAK POWER: 34 kW
STANDARD CHARGING TIME: 9,7 HOURS
WEIGHT: 140 KG

The Zero Motorcycles FXE is a high-end electric motorcycle with a futuristic design. Key specifications include the aircraft-grade aluminum frame, Bosch anti-lock brake system, and Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires.

The FXE comes with pre-set modes (eco and sport), but you can use the Zero Motorcycles app to customize your performance.

The Z-Force® 7,2 battery provides up to 169 km of city range and takes approximately 9,7 hours to charge from a standard household outlet. You can purchase quick chargers for an additional $775 to reduce charging time:

  • With one accessory charger, charging from 0% to 100% takes 4,1 hours
  • With maximum accessory chargers, charging from 0% to 100% takes 1,8 hours

Though pricey (and not everyone can afford it), the FXE is a capable city commuter that handles well in traffic and performs nicely as an everyday bike. Some reviewers, however, have complained about the range.

5. Ryvid Anthem

Ryvid Anthem

CITY RANGE: 120 KM
TOP SPEED: 120 KM/H
PEAK POWER: 14 kW
STANDARD CHARGING TIME: 3,25 HOURS
WEIGHT: 142 KG

The Ryvid Anthem is a sporty electric motorcycle with an aerospace-inspired frame made of cold-folded corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel. It offers multiple ride modes (sport, eco, reverse, or cruise control) and a seat that can be adjusted from 30 to 34 inches (762 to 864 millimeters) to accommodate riders of different heights.

With wheels and a handle, the Anthem’s 4,3 kWh battery pack is easy to roll to and from a charging point. Recharge time will depend on the voltage:

  • With 110V (up to 20A), it takes 3,25 hours to reach 100%
  • With 220V (up to 40A), it takes 1,85 hours to reach 100%

Reviewers say this bike is best suited for use on city streets as it accelerates well and is easy to maneuver. Plus, the Ryvid Anthem is nearly silent—with only a slight whirring noise from the belt. It’s not designed for long joyrides, but rather for day-to-day commutes.

4. Metorbike

Metorbike

CITY RANGE: UP TO 110 KM
TOP SPEED: 50 KM/H
PEAK POWER: 7 kW
STANDARD CHARGING TIME: 3–4 HOURS
WEIGHT: 76 KG

The Meteorbike is an electric motorcycle with a cafe racer aesthetic and minimalist style.

The German-made bike comes standard with a 1,63 kWh removable battery that provides a range of 70 km. For those who need more range, a 2,5 kWh battery is available as an upgrade—giving you the ability to travel 100+ km on a single charge. Most people should be able to get by on this for their daily commutes.

The Metorbike has multiple customization options; you can choose from regular or stud tires, an oak, smoked oak, or mahogany bench, and a variety of paint finishes.

One of the coolest features is the sound package that simulates the rumble of a classic motorcycle engine. This is ideal if you want to be noticed in traffic. You’ll start with one default sound profile, but you can get the multi-sound package for an extra fee—which includes eight different sounds.

3. Velca Tramontana S

Velca Tramontana S

CITY RANGE: 90 KM
TOP SPEED: 90 KM/H
PEAK POWER: 5 kW
STANDARD CHARGING TIME: 6 HOURS
WEIGHT: 83 KG

The Velca Tramontana S is a retro-styled electric motorcycle that comes equipped with Michelin City Grip 2 tires on both the front and rear. While it may look like a scooter, it’s classified as a motorcycle by its manufacturer.

Velca’s bike is available in three colors (british green, matte black, and crayon grey) and has room for two riders—with a maximum load capacity of 170 kg. It’s powered by a 72V/42AH lithium-ion battery that takes approximately 6 hours to charge from 0% to 100%.

Some of the available extras include:

  • A rear glove box
  • A USB port for charging devices
  • A keyless alarm

Based on reviews, the Tramontana S is roomy with plenty of foot space, simple to operate and control (even for novices), and agile enough to navigate through traffic. Just keep in mind that the range is 90 km, which may not be enough for longer commutes.

2. LiveWire S2 Del Mar

LiveWire S2 Del Mar

CITY RANGE: 181 KM
TOP SPEED: 165 KM/H
PEAK POWER: 63 kW
STANDARD CHARGING TIME: 8,4 HOURS
WEIGHT: 197 KG

The LiveWire S2 Del Mar is a top-of-the-line electric motorcycle from Harley Davidson. It has five ride modes (sport, road, range, rain, and custom), a modular cast aluminum frame, and 19-inch wheels.

The S2 Del Mar comes in four colors: nimbus gray, nightfall blue, millrace blue, and asphalt black.

It can be charged to 100% in 8,4 hours with Level 1 charging and in 142 minutes with Level 2 charging. But don’t expect to speed up the process with a fast charger; the S2 Del Mar doesn’t support Level 3 DC fast charging.

Those who have taken the S2 Del Mar for a spin say this city slicker is designed primarily for urban riders; it’s silent, takes corners smoothly, and has the range most commuters need. But it’s not cheap—and some riders have complained about the seat comfort.

1. Ride Colibri M22

Ride Colibri M22:

CITY RANGE: 200 KM
TOP SPEED: 100 KM/H
PEAK POWER: 4 kW
STANDARD CHARGING TIME: 2 HOURS
WEIGHT: 85 KG (with 3 batteries)

The Ride Colibri M22 is a commuter-friendly electric motorcycle with a range of 200 km—the longest in its class.

This minimalist electric motorcycle is built with a rock-solid chromoly frame, a pair of 17-inch wheels, and a powerful hub motor that provides excellent acceleration. It also comes with three ride modes (eco, dynamic, and off-road) and a plush seat that makes even the longest commute comfortable.

The agile M22 can take you through hours of heavy traffic and still have plenty of juice left for an after-work ride. When you’re done riding, the M22 folds up neatly to fit into tight parking spots, elevators, and apartments. The long-range model weighs 85 kg, but you can remove its three batteries to reduce the bike’s weight to 30 kg—light enough to carry up the stairs if you need to.

Charging the Ride Colibri M22’s 5,4 kWh battery pack to full takes 6 hours. You can either:

  • Plug the entire bike into the charger (6 hours to fully recharge)
  • Plug each battery into the charger individually (2 hours to charge each module)

The M22 is also customizable with accessories like mudguards, rear trunks, speakers, side panels, and color options in white, yellow, and black. And the best part? It’s all for less than $5,000!

Want to buy an electric motorcycle but not sure which one suits you? You can make the decision easier by focusing on your needs.

What you’re looking for is a capable, well-made, and reasonably-priced electric motorcycle suited for your intended purpose—whether that’s commuting, off-roading, long-distance travel, or anything in between.

In this buying guide, we’ll cover:

  • Types of electric motorcycles for different riding purposes
  • Factors to consider when making your purchase

Let’s find your go-to ride! 👇

Types of Electric Motorcycles to Choose From

Electric motorcycles are designed for different riding purposes. To find your perfect match, ask yourself:

What will you use your electric motorcycle for?

1. Daily Commutes

Compact, light, and nimble electric motorcycles are ideal for everyday commutes. They accelerate quickly and weave easily through congested city streets, crowded parking lots, and narrow passageways.

Typical commuter models reach city-legal speeds of:

  • 45 km/h in Europe
  • 48 km/h in the United States (though regulations vary depending on jurisdiction)

Plus, electric motorcycles can be fully charged in just a few hours, so you can easily top up your two-wheeler’s battery before or even during your workday.

2. Long-Distance Travels

Bikes designed for long-distance travel need to be comfortable—with well-padded and roomy seats, adjustable suspension systems, and comfortable handgrips. It’s even better if they come with built-in or add-on luggage storage for your belongings.

With an impressive range between charges, these electric motorcycles can take you far and wide.

Some models allow you to add extra batteries to double or even triple your range. For example, the Ride Colibri M22 can be fitted with a single battery for a range of 50 km (for urban commutes) or with three batteries for a range of 200 km (for long-haul trips).

3. Off-Road Rides

Tough enough to ‘take a beating and keep on going’, electric off-road motorcycles are capable of handling the roughest terrain—from sand to gravel and mud.

These adrenaline-pumping two-wheelers come with:

  • More power and torque than the typical commuter bike
  • Knobby tires for better traction, acceleration, and braking
  • Softer suspension to soak up bumps and jolts

Certain models offer customizable riding modes that allow you to switch between on-road and off-road performance.

4. Utility

Utility electric motorcycles are well-suited for transporting goods and making deliveries. They have a large storage capacity and can be equipped with various accessories, such as racks, baskets, and trailers.

Sure, they may not be the fastest motorcycles on the road. But that’s not what they’re built for; their purpose is to be functional.

Even if a motorcycle isn’t built for utility, you can make it more functional with accessories like extended tail sections, top boxes, and passenger add-ons.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Electric Motorcycle

1. Performance

When evaluating the performance of an electric motorcycle, there are a few things you should look at:

  • How far can the electric motorcycle take you?

For shorter trips, such as commuting to work or running errands, a motorcycle with a range of 50 km should be sufficient. If you plan on taking longer trips, you’ll need a model with a range of up to 200 km. This will allow you to commute to and from work and still have plenty of charge left for a weekend getaway (e.g. from London to Brighton).

Your range may vary depending on the weather, the load you’re carrying, and the type of terrain you’re traveling on.

  • What’s the maximum speed the electric motorcycle can reach?

Some models are limited to 45 km/h, while others are capable of reaching 100 km/h or more.

Speed is not as important in the city as it is on the highway; the stop-and-go traffic and strict speed limits will keep you from going too fast.

But if you’re a thrill-seeker who wants to go from ‘slow and steady’ to ‘fast and furious’ on a high-speed road, then you’ll need an electric motorcycle that can keep up with that.

  • How much torque does the electric motorcycle have?

Electric motorcycles with exceptional performance have a torque output ranging from 140 Nm to 280 Nm. This allows the bike to accelerate quickly, go up hills without any trouble, and reach top speeds in a shorter amount of time.

Good torque is also useful for taking on a variety of terrains, especially off-road. You’ll have more control over your bike and be able to navigate challenging terrain with more ease.

  • What is the amount of power the electric motorcycle can supply?

Two-wheelers powered by 4 kW hub motors provide excellent acceleration and top speeds of over 100 km/h, making them a great option for both urban and off-road use.

Riders looking to haul heavy loads, ride aggressively, or hit high speeds on the highway should pick a model with a higher power output—preferably exceeding 10 kW.

2. Motorcycle Size and Weight

Electric motorcycles are built to accommodate riders of all shapes and sizes. Some models are extremely light (weighing in at just 55 kg), while others are quite hefty (coming in at 225 kg). There are also bikes designed specifically for shorter or taller riders.

You should choose an electric motorcycle that is tailored to your height and weight. This will make it easier to:

  • Get on and off the bike
  • Maintain full control
  • Sit comfortably

When seated on the two-wheeler, you’ll need to have enough legroom, be able to grasp the handlebars without hunching over or straining your back, and generally maintain a relaxed posture. Some models feature adjustable ergonomics, allowing you to customize the fit for greater comfort.

3. Battery Technology and Charging Time

Electric two-wheelers use two main types of batteries:

Lithium-ion batteries power the majority of electric motorcycles today. They have a higher power density, longer lifespan, and superior performance—even in cold temperatures. Plus, their quick charge time of 2–3 hours reduces the waiting time between rides.

Lead-acid batteries are the most affordable option for electric motorcycles, but they also have a shorter range. They take longer to charge (up to 10 hours) and lose efficiency and capacity in cold temperatures, which can further reduce their range.

So, you’ll get better performance with a lithium-ion-powered motorcycle. Just be sure to check the battery’s capacity; the higher it is, the farther you’ll be able to travel.

4. Design, Features, and Build Quality

Electric motorcycles are available in a wide range of designs, with some featuring:

  • A lightweight build that makes two-wheelers quick to accelerate and more responsive to rider input
  • A low or high center of gravity that affects how the bike handles when cornering
  • A compact design that allows for easy storage and transport

Regardless of their design, most models are equipped with advanced technologies (e.g. smart connectivity, customizable riding modes, and anti-theft systems) that make riding easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

The build quality is another crucial aspect to consider, as it will have a big impact on the bike’s durability and performance over time. Take a close look at the frame, battery housing, brake discs, and even the electric wiring; all components should be made of strong (and preferably lightweight) materials.

5. Price, Fees, and Cost of Ownership

Prices range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, but there are plenty of great electric motorcycles available for under $5,000.

On top of the purchase price, you’ll need to factor in insurance, registration, and licensing fees—depending on how your two-wheeler is classified.

But don’t worry, the savings on fuel and maintenance will compensate for all these expenses. Electric motorcycles are much cheaper to operate and require very little maintenance; it’s wise to schedule a service checkup every six months or so.

6. Local Regulations

Not all electric motorcycles can be used on public roads.

Dirt bikes, for example, are not street-legal by default. This is because they don’t have the necessary equipment, like turn signals, rearview mirrors, and headlights, for operating on public roads. As a result, these models can only be used on designated off-road trails.

An electric motorcycle designed for street use is fully equipped for legal operation on public roads.

Found Your Dream Ride?

Finding the right electric motorcycle among the many available options can be challenging.

That’s where I come in.

I’d like to introduce you to the Ride Colibri M22: a street-legal, compact, and lightweight electric motorcycle that goes 200 km on a single charge and is perfect for both on and off-road use.

Today’s best electric motorcycles offer more than just a very good price; they also come packed with a well-rounded mix of features, performance, and design.

We’ve singled out six of the best bang-for-your-buck electric motorcycles on the market in 2024.

These two-wheelers are street-legal, fun to ride, and nicely spec’d. Some even travel up to (or very close to) a solid 200 km with fully charged batteries.

They’re excellent picks for anyone seeking great value at a fair price.

Electric Motorcycles That Offer the Greatest Value in 2024

6. CAKE ÖSA

Option #1

CAKE ÖSA FLEX ELECTRIC MOPED

BATTERY: 2.5 kWh
WEIGHT: 87 KG
RANGE: 92 KM
SPEED: 45 KM/H
POWER: 4 kW (NOMINAL POWER), 5 kW (PEAK POWER)
TORQUE: 151 Nm
CHARGING TIME: 2 HOURS (0-80%), 3 HOURS (0-100%)

CAKE Ösa Flex is a utility moped used for commuting or… as a “workbench on wheels”.

It can be decked out with a variety of accessories, including rear/front baskets, top boxes, and trailers for heavy loads. All these add-ons will cost extra, with the cargo trailer being the most expensive at €4,475.

This utility moped travels at 45 km/h with a range of 92 km. You can choose from four ride modes via the CAKE Connect app to prioritize range, speed, or a balance of both.

Ösa Flex’s removable battery fully charges in three hours when plugged into a standard 220 V outlet, whether on or off the electric bike.

While riders appreciate the comfort of the Ösa Flex, some have found the display hard to read in sunlight—making it difficult to ride in sunny conditions.

Option #2

CAKE ÖSA+ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

BATTERY: 3.5 kWh
WEIGHT: 97.5 KG
RANGE: 111 KM
SPEED: +90 KM/H
POWER: 6 kW (NOMINAL POWER), 9 kW (PEAK POWER)
TORQUE: 151 Nm
CHARGING TIME: 3 HOURS (0-80%), 4.5 HOURS (0-100%)

CAKE Ösa+ is classified as a modular utility electric motorcycle for both work and personal use.

Similar to the moped version, it offers accessories for mounting to the rear, middle, and front sections.

Weighing in at 97.5 kg, this utility motorcycle is heavier than the moped variant and costs more, but offers increased speed, range, and power capabilities. This means the extra cost is justified.

Though it has a great top speed, riders feel the Ösa+ is more of a practical bike than one built for speed.

Other reviewers find the high-capacity battery pack a bit heavy and suggest upgrading to a more comfortable seat and suspension for longer rides.

5. LAND MOTO DISTRICT STREET

LAND MOTO DISTRICT STREET ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

BATTERY: 1.8 – 5.5 kWh
WEIGHT: ~104 KG (ACCORDING TO REVIEWS)
RANGE: 64 – 193 KM
SPEED: 112 KM/H
POWER: 11.5 kW (NOMINAL POWER), 17 kW (PEAK POWER)
TORQUE: 280 Nm
CHARGING TIME: 1.5 - 5.5 HOURS

Land Moto District Street is an electric motorcycle with a modern aesthetic, strong peak output, and generous range per charge.

Just like most electric two-wheelers, Land Moto District Street requires minimal maintenance. It has an easy-to-remove battery, a waterproof LCD screen, and four ride modes—each with varying top speeds:

  • Mode 1: 43 km/h
  • Mode 2: 59 km/h
  • Mode 3: 112 km/h
  • Mode 4: 112+ km/h

The bike makes a great choice for both beginner riders and city commuters. With a range of over 190 km, it should be able to handle most people’s daily commutes without a problem. Just bear in mind that it might not be the best fit for off-road or long-distance travel, as per the reviews.

4. ONYX MOTORBIKES | RCR 72V DIRT KIT

ONYX MOTORBIKES | RCR 72V DIRT KIT ELECTRIC MOTORBIKE
BATTERY: 1.6 kWh
WEIGHT: 70 KG
RANGE: ECO (190 KM), SPORT
(72 KM)
SPEED: +90 KM/H
POWER: 7.2 kW (NOMINAL POWER), 13 kW (PEAK POWER)
TORQUE: N/A
CHARGING TIME: ~5.4 HOURS (10 AMP CHARGING TO 100%, ACCORDING TO REVIEWS)

Onyx Motorbikes RCR 72V Dirt Kit is a modern electric motorbike that gives off a retro-inspired vibe. It’s available in two versions, standard and shorty, with a 3-inch (〜7 cm) difference in suspension height.

The bike’s suspension system includes a front hydraulic fork and a rear coil over dual shocks.

With its hybrid human-assisted pedal drive, the RCR 72V Dirt Kit can handle rough ground and hit speeds of up to 90 km/h in sport mode—yet this mode is intended for off-road use only. For everyday riding, you’ll want to use eco mode, which offers a range of 190 km.

The bike has a 13 kW peak power and a display that shows useful information like real-time volts, mode settings, or odometer readings. The battery is removable, but reviewers say it can be a bit difficult to take out.

3. BREKR B4000

BREKR B4000 ELECTRIC MOPED

BATTERY: 2.0 kWh
WEIGHT: 69 KG (WITHOUT BATTERY), 79 KG(WITH BATTERY)
RANGE: 50 – 80 KM
SPEED: 25 – 45 KM/H
POWER: 2.5 kW (RATED POWER), 4 kW (PEAK POWER)
TORQUE: 140 Nm
CHARGING TIME: 5 HOURS

Brekr B4000 is a sporty-looking electric moped designed with a low center of gravity.

It fits two removable batteries, with one battery providing 80 km of range. Adding a second battery extends this range. According to reviews, the range depends on how fast you ride. At a moderate speed, you’ll get the advertised 80-kilometer range. But at full speed, the range can drop a bit.

While charging is easy (via the bike itself or by removing the battery and charging it separately), one reviewer did note that it could be a little faster.

Unlike other models, this moped is not quiet; it wants to be heard for a “fun and safe” riding experience.

Yes, safety is a key feature of the Brekr B4000. The Brekr app, which has a built-in GPS module, keeps you connected to the bike so you can track all your rides and protect it from theft.

The Brekr B4000 is also customizable, with 11 frame cover colors, two suspension colors, and a brown or black saddle to choose from.

2. BLACK TEA MOTORBIKES︱BONFIRE E

BLACK TEA MOTORBIKES︱BONFIRE E ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

RANGE: 50 KM
SPEED: 75 KM/H
POWER: 3 kW (RATED POWER), 5 kW (PEAK POWER)
TORQUE: 180 Nm
CHARGING TIME: 3.5 HOURS

Black Tea Motorbikes Bonfire E is a scrambler-styled electric motorcycle made in Munich, Germany.

A modern take on classic scramblers and trackers, the bike features a low-maintenance wheel hub motor that enables it to reach speeds of 75 km/h. With space for two removable batteries, riders can double the range.

Riding a motorcycle in winter can be difficult due to icy roads, freezing temperatures, and poor visibility caused by rain, snow, or fog.

Despite the challenges, it’s possible to ride your electric two-wheeler during the winter season if you take proper precautions: prepare your motorcycle for winter conditions, dress in cold-weather clothing, and stay off snow-packed or frosty streets.

But you can also winterize your electric motorcycle if you prefer not to ride in colder temperatures.

This article covers helpful tips for electric winter motorcycle riding and storage, including how to:

  • Accessorize your motorcycle for the colder season
  • Ride safely (and legally!) in winter conditions
  • Care for your bike during the winter months
  • Get your electric motorcycle ready for storage
  • De-winterize in spring to get back on the road

Riding Your Electric Motorcycle in Winter

1. Should You Ride Your Electric Motorcycle in Winter?

Yes, as long as you prepare for the weather and comply with local laws and regulations.

Some countries mandate winter tires. Others only require them in specific weather conditions like snow, ice, or slush-covered roads. And others ban mopeds on icy and snowy roads. That’s why you’ll always need to check the local legal norms (which are subject to change!) before riding your electric two-wheeler during the winter season.

A few suggestions for those who plan to ride their electric motorcycle in winter:

  • Check weather forecasts, road conditions, and local regulations before hitting the road.
  • Make sure your motorcycle is well-equipped and accessorized for winter weather.
  • Keep your headlights on even during the day for better road visibility.
  • Stay off snowy, icy, and slushy roads, as well as uneven paths, as they may hide dangers.
  • Ride at a slow and cautious pace to prevent collisions, falls, and injuries.

2. Will Cold Temperatures Damage Your Electric Motorcycle?

Frigid weather can affect the performance of lithium-ion batteries, causing a slight decrease in range and charging capabilities.

You’ll likely need to charge the batteries a bit more frequently during winter. But avoid charging when temperatures dip below 0°C/32°F to prolong battery lifespan. When temperatures fall below this limit, bring your battery inside for charging.

As temperatures drop, the air inside tires also condenses—resulting in a decrease in tire pressure. This can impact braking, traction, and stability. So, in cold conditions, you’ll have to quickly check and adjust tire pressure every two weeks.

3. How Can You Accessorize Your Electric Motorcycle for Winter Riding?

Here are some key add-ons that allow you to ride safely, comfortably, and confidently even in the most extreme weather conditions:

  • Winter tires offer exceptional grip and traction on snow, ice, or slush; they keep riders safer on the road, enabling them to brake, stop, and turn without worrying about skidding or sliding.
  • Metal snow chains provide greater control on slippery roads, keep motorcyclists from getting stuck in deep snow, and protect tires from wear on rough or frozen surfaces.
  • Windshields block out cold air, reduce wind noise, and protect from precipitation, flying debris, and strong winds.
  • Handguards improve handlebar grip and keep hands dry, warm, and protected in case of crashes.
  • Heated grips prevent hand numbness, helping riders to maintain optimal control of their bikes, react quickly, and enjoy longer and more comfortable winter trips.

4. What Should You Wear When Riding a Motorcycle in Cold Weather?

In wet, freezing, and windy winter weather, wearing proper riding gear is not just about comfort; it’s vital for safety.

  • A full-face helmet with an anti-fog visor protects the rider’s head, face, and jaw in the event of an accident; it also helps keep the face warm and prevents condensation on the visor to ensure clear visibility.
  • Waterproof, windproof, and reflective (or brightly colored) gear is essential to stay dry, shielded from strong winds, and visible on the road; try to attach reflective tape to your helmet, jacket, or boots to be more easily noticed by others on the road in low-light conditions.
  • Heated gear, such as jackets, socks, and pants, helps maintain a stable and comfortable body temperature; it protects from the biting cold and reduces the risk of health issues (e.g. hypothermia, pneumonia, frostbite).
  • Fleece or wool neck gaiters provide thermal insulation, keep the neck and face warm, and protect from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
  • Layers help retain body heat; you can add or remove layers as needed, but it’s normally recommended to go with a wool base layer (e.g. long-sleeved blouse), a lightweight mid-layer (e.g. fleece jacket, full-zip vest, sweater), and a wind-blocking/water-resistant outer layer (e.g. jacket).

5. What Winter Riding Techniques Can Help You Stay Safe on the Road?

Adapt your riding style to safely travel on icy, slippery, and wet winter roads.

  • Slow down and be cautious when stopping or making turns to avoid accidents.
  • Avoid abrupt turns or sudden movements that could potentially result in loss of control, falls, or head-on collisions.
  • Be gentle on the brakes to prevent skidding on icy surfaces; braking too hard or too soon can put riders at serious risk of injury.
  • Keep a safe distance from other vehicles to avoid rear-ending them; stopping distances are longer in winter weather (e.g. at a speed of 20 mph/32 km/h, it takes 393 feet/120 meters to stop).
  • Take breaks to warm up when necessary or if conditions become too dangerous; when you’re caught off guard by sudden changes in weather, stop and wait for conditions to improve.

Storing Your Electric Motorcycle for Winter

1. How Do You Prep Your Electric Motorcycle for Winter Storage?

By properly preparing your electric motorcycle for winter storage, you’ll keep it in optimal condition throughout its hibernation and avoid expensive repairs when it’s time to de-winterize it.

  • Clean the bike to remove any traces of dirt, salt, or other residue.
  • Rinse with low-pressure water, dry completely, and apply protective sprays to both painted and metal surfaces to prevent corrosion.
  • Inflate the tires and lift them off the cold ground to prevent flat spots; if the motorcycle stays on the ground, rotate the tires once a month.
  • Take off any electronic gadgets or components that may be sensitive to cold temperatures.
  • Choose a clean indoor storage location with stable humidity and temperature levels.
  • Use a good-quality cover to protect your motorcycle from moisture, dust, and sunlight.

2. Where Can You Store Your Electric Motorcycle During Winter?

Before making room in the garage to store your electric motorcycle for the winter, make sure the space is:

  • Climate-controlled, dry, and well-ventilated to prevent moisture build-up, rust, and mold.
  • Sealed tightly with no openings for rodents to sneak in and damage the wiring or other components.
  • Protected from direct sunlight, chemicals, and heavy objects that could tip over onto the electric motorcycle.
  • Well-cleaned and free from dust, grease, loose particles, and any other foreign elements.

If you don’t have access to a garage, find a covered parking area, rent a storage unit, or ask a friend with a garage if you can store your bike there. Just don’t leave your electric motorcycle outside in freezing temperatures, as it can cause permanent damage to the electrical system, corrode metal parts, and ruin tires, among other potential issues.

With a foldable electric motorcycle like the Ride Colibri M22, you won’t have to worry about finding a storage space anymore; bring it up to your apartment to keep it dry, safe, and at the right temperature.

3. What’s the Best Way to Store and Care for Your Battery?

Correctly storing and caring for your electric motorcycle’s battery is essential for preventing damage, especially during harsh winter weather. Here are some useful guidelines to follow:

  • Wipe the battery with a dry and clean cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
  • Make sure the battery is charged to a level between 50–60%.
  • Shield the battery from direct sunlight and heat sources (e.g. radiators).
  • Store the battery at the right temperature (59°F/15°C) and low humidity level (50%).
  • Check the battery for signs of corrosion every month; if the battery is stored in a cold environment, monitor the charge level to prevent deep discharges.

Remember to consult the user manual for specific battery care and charging instructions from your manufacturer before taking any advice.

4. Is It Okay to Start Your Electric Motorcycle While in Storage Mode?

The answer is yes, but only if you plan on riding it. Otherwise, there’s no need to start your electric motorcycle after it has been winterized and put into storage.

Waking the motorcycle up and letting it idle for a short time before putting it back to sleep won’t make it spring-ready; properly winterizing it will.

You can use a battery tender if you’re concerned about maintaining the battery’s charge level during the winter months.

5. How Should You De-Winterize Your Electric Motorcycle When Spring Arrives?

As the weather gets warmer and roads clear of snow and ice, it’s time to take your electric motorcycle out of storage and start riding again. Prior to setting off on your first ride of the season, be sure to check up on your bike:

  • Inspect for any signs of corrosion, wear, or damage (e.g. worn-out wiring, loose battery connections, electrical malfunctions).
  • Fully charge the battery before you reinstall it onto the motorcycle.
  • Check the tire pressure and inflate as needed.
  • Test the brakes to ensure that they’re responsive and not feeling spongy.
  • Turn on the headlights, taillights, and turn signals.

Try to take a short test ride to get reacquainted with your bike and be 100% sure that everything is in good condition.

Riding a motorcycle is an excellent way to travel from A to B without having to worry about traffic jams or finding a parking spot.

Not all motorcycles are the same, though! A gas motorcycle, much like any other bike, offers thrilling riding experiences. But it’s also quite slow to accelerate, costly to refuel and maintain, and not exactly eco-friendly.

If you want to lower your carbon footprint, cut down on operating costs, enjoy faster acceleration, or refuel virtually anywhere, then it may be a good idea to swap your traditional gas-guzzling motorcycle for an electric one. 🔌

To make your decision easier, let’s settle the ‘electric motorcycle vs gas motorcycle’ debate and explore:

  • Why electric motorcycles are the better option when compared to gas-powered two-wheelers
  • What common misconceptions could be preventing you from making the switch to electric mobility

Why Electric Motorcycles Trump Gas-Powered Ones

1. Environmental Impact

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Electric two-wheelers are powered by rechargeable batteries instead of combustion engines, so they don’t emit any of the pollutants that come from exhaust or tailpipe emissions, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and more.

Plus, electric motors operate without engine oil, which can burn up and produce toxic fumes when petrol engines overheat. Used oil also affects wildlife, vegetation, and water supplies if improperly disposed of. So, by going electric, you can keep the air we breathe clean and the environment free from oil pollution.

Even better, electric vehicles are energy-efficient; the electricity used to power your electric bike can be generated from renewable sources, such as wind or solar energy.

They don’t add to noise pollution either. Electric motorcycles may not be completely silent, but they come close. You’ll likely hear a faint buzzing from the motor and belt, but that’s nothing compared to the 80-decibel (or higher!) exhaust noise you get from a gas motorcycle.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

Gas motorcycles are known to emit harmful air pollutants that lead to serious environmental and health problems. When gasoline is burned for fuelling vehicles, it releases toxic substances like:

  • Carbon dioxide—a greenhouse gas that causes climate change
  • Benzene—a carcinogen linked to leukemia
  • Particulate matter—an air pollutant associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases

Gasoline is also a highly flammable liquid. So be careful, as you could accidentally trigger a fiery explosion.

The loud noise produced by gas-powered motorcycles is another environmental concern. Many nations have set a maximum noise emission limit of 80 decibels to combat this problem. But some motorcycles can exceed this limit, reaching up to 119 decibels. Just so you get an idea, noise levels above 85 decibels can permanently damage your hearing.

2. Performance

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Electric motorcycles don’t need to be warmed up; they’re ready to go the moment you hop on. On top of that, they take off more quickly than gas motorcycles as electric motors can produce full torque at 0 RPM (revolutions per minute).

That’s right, super-fast acceleration from a dead stop!

Some models can even go from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2 seconds or less.

Don’t worry, electric two-wheelers deliver great speed, too. When used on public roads, most models are capped at 45 km/h to abide by the applicable regulations. But when taken off-road, they can reach speeds of over 100 km/h.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

Motorcycles that run on gas can hit high speeds of up to 420 mph (680 km/h). But it’s very dangerous to take them to these limits as it puts the rider at risk of serious injury or death.

Though gas-powered bikes can be fast, they take longer to warm up and get moving. The acceleration is sluggish because torque peaks at mid-RPMs in gas engines.

There are, however, a variety of other factors that can contribute to poor acceleration: worn spark plugs, clogged air filters, bad gas, or a dirty carburetor.

3. Handling and Maneuverability

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Most electric motorcycles are lightweight, agile, and easy to control. Take the Ride Colibri M22, for example; the bike weighs:

  • 30 kg without batteries
  • 55 kg with one battery
  • 85 kg with three batteries

A lighter bike makes it much simpler to maneuver through busy city streets without tiring yourself out. You won’t need to put in a lot of effort to lean into turns, steer, and brake.

It’s also much easier to lift and carry a lightweight motorcycle up the stairs or onto public transportation.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

Heavy gas motorcycles offer improved stability at higher speeds, but their weight and bulky size can make them very difficult to maneuver through heavy traffic or tight spaces.

The average weight of a motorcycle is 275 kg, with certain models, such as touring motorcycles, weighing as much as 365 kg. Imagine having to lift and carry a motorcycle of this size if it were to tip over on the street. You’d need a lot of strength!

You’ll also have to learn a few techniques for controlling a heavyweight bike, such as how to stand it up and maintain the correct body posture.

4. Riding Experience

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Those who choose to ride electric enjoy low-noise, fume-free, and smoother journeys.

Electric motorcycles typically feature a simplistic design, so they’re easier to figure out and operate—which is perfect for first-time riders especially. There’s no need to rev the engine or shift gears as the electric motor provides direct power to the wheels.

If you’re new to motorcycling, you’ll need to get familiar with the basics like controlling your bike, keeping your balance, and turning corners. Don’t worry, though; with a bit of practice, you’ll soon be ready to ride on public roads.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

Operating a gas motorcycle takes more skill as riders must understand how to shift gears and control the clutch.

The ride is not always as smooth and comfortable. Riders are inevitably exposed to engine vibrations that negatively impact their well-being. Research on whole-body vibration exposure has revealed that motorcyclists often experience discomfort in their upper body, muscular fatigue, and reduced stability. Prolonged exposure to these vibrations can lead to headaches, sickness, and in extreme cases, permanent nerve damage.

5. Maintenance, Repairs, and Upgrades

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Your electric motorcycle won’t need regular servicing, but you should still look after your ride. It’s important to regularly inspect your brakes, tires, headlights, and turn signals to make sure they’re all functioning properly. For optimal care, you should also:

  • Keep an eye on battery health
  • Wash off dirt, mud, and grime
  • Store your motorcycle in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated place

Electric two-wheelers are built to stand the test of time; their sturdy frames should last you forever, whereas the batteries may need to be replaced every 5-10 years. But if you’re looking to upgrade any components, like the seat or brakes, your supplier can always help you find the highest-quality parts. You can also accessorize your bike; mudguards, rear trunks, and LED strips are just a few of the extras you can get.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

Gas bikes are high maintenance and can cost up to $1,500 per year for upkeep. As part of regular care, you should:

  • Change the gear oil
  • Check the air filter for dirt and debris and clean or replace
  • Inspect the exhaust system for damage or leaks
  • Clean and adjust the carburetor for optimal fuel-air mixture
  • Check and adjust the chain tension
  • Inspect the spark plugs and replace them as needed
  • Clean the fuel tank
  • Lubricate all moving parts

If your motorcycle is not performing as well as you’d like it to, you’ll need to make some upgrades. For example, you can install a premium air filter to allow more air to flow through the engine.

6. Operating Costs

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

The cost per mile for electricity is far lower than that of gasoline.

Of course, the cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity varies by location. In December 2023, Arkansas, Washington, and Oklahoma had some of the lowest electricity costs in the US, with rates of 9.99¢/kWh, 9.79¢/kWh, and 10.72¢/kWh respectively.

Hawaii had the most expensive electricity rate: 32.76¢/kWh. Yet the average end-use electricity price in the US is projected to go down over the next 30 years. The European Union has also been working to stabilize electricity costs—and most member states have seen a decrease in electricity prices in the latter half of 2023.

Moreover, electric motorcycles require much less maintenance and repair than gas-powered ones; a thorough service check is recommended every six months.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

Refueling a classic motorcycle is relatively simple, but the unpredictable cost of gasoline can make it expensive to keep the vehicle running at times.

On 11 December 2023, the average gas price in the US was $3.158 per gallon, while in Europe prices varied from €2,029 in the Netherlands to €1,917 in Switzerland and €1,883 in France. These prices, however, can differ from day to day.

Besides refueling, regular maintenance like oil changes, valve adjustments, or filter replacements is needed to keep the motorcycle running properly. This adds to the cost of ownership.

7. Convenience of Charging

⚡ ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

To charge your electric motorcycle, simply plug it into a 220V wall socket. That’s it!

You can easily recharge your electric motorcycle wherever you have access to an electrical outlet—whether it be in your own home, at the gym, or even at a café while you enjoy a cup of your favorite brew. You can also plug it in overnight and wake up to a fully charged motorcycle.

On average, it takes about 2 to 3 hours to fully charge an empty battery.

⛽ GAS MOTORCYCLES

The only (safe) way to refuel a gas motorcycle is to make a pit stop at a gas station. This could be a bit of a problem if you’re stuck in traffic and your tank is running low. Plus, when you finally get to the station, you may have to wait in line to get to a pump—and that could take a while.

If you live in a rural area, you may not have access to any nearby gas stations. So you’ll need to look for other options, such as 24/7 pumps located in a neighboring city.

Electric Motorcycle vs Gas Motorcycle: Who Wins the Race?

Let’s Clear Up Some Misconceptions That Might Be Holding You Back

Myth 1. Low Range

Many still mistakenly believe that electric motorcycles don’t have the range for long-distance trips. In reality, electric motorcycles like the Ride Colibri M22 can go up to 200 km on one charge. That’s enough to get you from London to Brighton and back without needing to stop and recharge. All you need to do is remember to plug in the batteries for a full charge before setting off.

As electric mobility technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more impressive ranges soon enough.

Myth 2. Electric Battery Production Emits More Carbon Dioxide Than Combustion Engine Vehicles

Although battery production is carbon-intensive, this is only a short-term problem; battery-powered vehicles emit far less carbon dioxide than traditional vehicles throughout their entire lifecycle.

Manufacturers who use renewable sources of energy to produce batteries drastically reduce their carbon footprint.

What’s more, it may be possible for batteries to become carbon-neutral through new technological advancements. But gasoline will never be a zero-carbon fuel; it will always be a contributor to climate change.

Myth 3. Short Battery Life

The longevity of your electric motorcycle’s battery depends on how well you care for it.

On average, the battery can endure about 1,000 charge cycles, which can be equivalent to up to 5 years of usage.

But with adequate care, you can extend the battery life up to a maximum of 10 years.

Myth 4. Poor Performance on Rugged Terrain and in Extreme Weather

Many electric motorcycles are outfitted with strong, durable tires that can easily handle rugged terrain. Models specifically designed for off-roading even come with improved suspensions and wider tires to ensure greater stability and grip.

It’s also safe to take your electric motorcycle out in the rain or snow. Many bikes are equipped with water-resistant cases to protect the battery from moisture and tires with good traction for slippery roads.

But don’t take it too far; submerging your bike in water could cause irreparable damage to the electrical components.

Ready to Ride Electric?

From lower operating costs to faster acceleration and a smaller environmental impact, there are plenty of reasons to make the switch to electric motorcycles.

Featuring a powerful 4 kW motor and smooth suspension system, the long-range Ride Colibri M22 is perfect for those who want to enjoy the best of electric riding without compromising on performance!

You’ll never want to look back! 👌

Ride Colibri, the electric mobility company, has raised $220,000 in pre-seed funding. This comes after the widely-viewed televised September pitch of our flagship product, Ride Colibri M22, on ‘Shark Tank Romania’ (also known as ‘Lions’ Empire’ in Romania and ‘Dragon’s Den’ in the UK, Australia, and other countries).

The Lions’ interest in investing in Ride Colibri validated what we have been working toward these past 18 months. Following the show’s broadcast, customers and angel investors began reaching out to us, resulting in additional pre-sales of the flagship Colibri model M22 on top of the $230,000 M22 pre-orders to date, and we quickly closed the pre-seed funding round. The financing will help us speed up production and delivery times.

Looking Back at the ‘Shark Tank Romania’ Experience

On October 3, 2023, founder Petre Georgescu presented the Ride Colibri M22 electric motorcycle to a group of five investors (referred to as ‘Lions’) on the set of ‘Shark Tank Romania’.

Petre introduced Ride Colibri M22, the first electric motorcycle manufactured in Romania, as a bike designed to provide long-distance rides with comfort at a great price—the launch offers starting at $2,799 + VAT for the single battery model and $3,795 + VAT for the triple battery model.

“Ride Colibri M22’s range of 200 km per charge is the highest in the market. Most of our competitors offer only a maximum 100 km per charge under ideal conditions.”
—Petre Georgescu, Founder of Ride Colibri, at ‘Shark Tank Romania’

And yes, charging this electric motorcycle costs less than a cup of coffee. ⚡

It has a wallet-friendly price tag and low running costs, as well as a simple and practical design that has made it attractive to riders worldwide. The two-wheeler has been well-received in the US and Europe, where our initial target buyers live. We aim to expand to Asia, South America, and Africa in due course. At the time of recording, we had sold 44 fully-paid motorcycles and generated over $230,000 in revenue. We also received 240 deposit-paid reservations and had over 3,000 people on the waiting list—and the numbers continue to grow.

With the help of the TV show’s investors, we aimed to reduce customer wait and delivery times to a few months, shipping faster than the industry norm. Petre proposed a deal that would make this possible: the Lions would invest €200,000 in exchange for 10% of the company’s capital stock. 30% of the funds would go toward working capital to speed up the delivery process.

Two ‘Lions’, Daniel Mischie (CEO of City Grill) and Răzvan Raț (former international football player and entrepreneur) offered €200,000 for 30% of the company’s stock. We countered the offer for 15%, valuing Ride Colibri at €1.33M, a significant discount for a production-ready company led by a second-time successful mobility founder with over €200,000 in paid-up pre-sales and a significant margin, but the Lions did not accept it. Still, we are thankful for their interest, feedback, and the chance to pitch the Ride Colibri M22 electric motorcycle on PRO TV, one of Romania’s largest TV networks, in a prime-time appearance with a significant online following.

Raising Pre-Seed Funding of $220,000 Post ‘Shark Tank Romania’

Soon after being featured on ‘Shark Tank Romania’, we succeeded in closing a pre-seed funding round.

The investment round was backed by six angel investors:

  • Paul Robert Cary—Entrepreneur, Angel Investor, and now Senior Vice President at Softbank-backed Jellysmack who acquired his third startup
  • Gabriela Amarie—Product Marketer & Founder of Digital Tailors Agency, acquired by Romania’s Softbinator Technologies [$CODE]
  • Radu Amarie—Angel Investor, Former Founder and CTO of Kamua, acquired by Jellysmack where Radu is a Senior Staff Engineer
  • Chris Severson—Managing Director at Terra Firma Capital Partners and former Topgun pilot and instructor
  • Shane Gray—Serial Entrepreneur and Angel Investor with several exits
  • Ștefan Muscalu—Founding Employee at Kamua (acquired by Jellysmack where he is a Staff Lead Software Engineer)

Investors have put their trust in our urban (and suburban!) mobility solution by contributing  $220,000 in pre-seed funding. Their financial support gives us the resources to speed up production and delivery—so that we can bring Ride Colibri M22, the world’s longest-range and most versatile electric motorcycle (there is an off-road version!), to more riders across the globe, much faster.

Ride Colibri is now incorporated in the United States of America, where the pre-seed fundraising was concluded.

Getting to Know the Ride Colibri M22

Having lived in large cities for many years, Petre Georgescu (Founder of Ride Colibri) is all too familiar with the daily struggles of urban traffic. The need for easy, fast, and convenient city transport led him to design the world’s lightest foldable bike, with a carbon fiber construction—the Hummingbird—and his latest creation, the Ride Colibri M22 electric motorcycle.

Crafted by Petre in his workshop in Giurgiu, Romania, Ride Colibri M22 is a no-fuss electric two-wheeler that allows for long, smooth rides. Described by aficionados as “Model T Ford Meets Tesla Model S,” this motorcycle is minimalistic, lightweight, and easy to handle, yet still delivers plenty of power and torque (as much as 15 washing machines!). It seats two people comfortably for extended journeys of up to 200 km before needing to be recharged. Plus, the M22 is very low maintenance, folds up to fit in cramped spaces, and can be ridden with a standard car driver’s license.

It comes equipped with up to 3 removable lithium-ion batteries, 17-inch wheels, a brushless hub motor, a powerful controller, and a comfortable suspension system.

Petre and the Ride Colibri team went through several prototypes and extensive testing before the M22 electric motorcycle was ready to go into production.

Production Timeline

  • November 2021: first prototype road test
  • July 2022: second prototype road test
  • June 2023: assembled the Alpha prototype
  • August 2023: initiated the type approval for street-legal use
  • October 2023: start of production development
  • January 2024: first customer deliveries

Production of the Ride Colibri M22 electric motorbike has kicked off at our assembly facility in Romania, with general deliveries to our customer base beginning in February 2024.

Summing Up

Exciting times lie ahead for us as we move forward with the development and delivery of the Ride Colibri M22 electric motorcycle.

The support of our investors has boosted the confidence we have in the M22 and the Ride Colibri brand, and our continued sales growth will propel us over the horizon.

Electric bikes are a great option for both quick city commutes and longer-distance trips. Not only are they much lighter and quieter than other motorized vehicles, but they are also very simple to ride, transport, and maintain.

But the question on everyone’s mind is, are electric bikes street-legal?

Riding electric bikes on public roads is permitted. Yet laws differ by location. What is legal in one place might not be allowed in another, so it’s always a good idea to check the laws and regulations set by your country, state, or municipality before getting on your bike.

This article will explore the legal and safety implications of electric bike use in Europe and the United States. We’ll discuss:

  • License requirements;
  • Insurance regulations;
  • Rules for carrying passengers;
  • Penalties for riding illegally, and more.

1. Can Electric Bikes Be Driven Legally on the Road?

Registration Requirements

Electric bikes fall into three categories with distinct registration rules. We discussed these regulations in the ‘Do eBikes Need to be Registered?’ article. Here’s a quick overview:

👉 Pedal-Assist Electric Bikes (Class 1 and Class 3—250-750W)

EUROPE: Electric bikes with 250 watts of power and assistance up to 25 km/h don’t require registration. S-Pedelecs with 500 watts of power and pedal assist up to 45 km/h must be registered in a majority of European countries, including Germany and Austria.

UNITED STATES: In New York, New Jersey, and the majority of states, there’s no need to register pedal-assist electric bikes moving at slow speeds (20 mph/~32 km/h).

👉 Throttle-Controlled Electric Bikes (Class 2—up to 750W)

EUROPE: Most countries (except the Netherlands) don’t require registration for throttle-controlled electric bikes meeting certain standards. In France, for example, these bikes must have a power output of 750 watts but are speed-limited to 20 km/h.

UNITED STATES: Throttle-controlled electric bikes in Colorado, New York, and the majority of states are treated as bicycles and don’t need to be registered.

👉 Electric Motorbikes (Class L1e-b—up to 4000W)

EUROPE & UNITED STATES: Electric motorbikes with power above 750 watts must be registered.

Traffic Lane Usage

Electric bikes can use the same pathways as traditional bicycles or motorized vehicles, depending on their classification.

👉 Pedal-Assist Electric Bikes (Class 1 and Class 3—250-750W)

EUROPE: Electric bikes have permission to travel on bike paths, bike lanes, and shared trails. But restrictions apply:

  • Switzerland allows bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h in marked pedestrian areas labeled ‘bicycles permitted’.
  • Ireland forbids electric bikes on footpaths.
  • Italy doesn’t allow electric bikes to travel faster than 6 km/h on pedestrian routes.

UNITED STATES: Washington D.C. allows electric bikes on sidewalks, O-street paths, and bicycle routes. Yet in New York, Class 1 and Class 3 bikes have specific travel rules: they must stick to bike lanes and streets where maximum speed doesn’t exceed 30 mph (~48 km/h).

👉 Throttle-Controlled Electric Bikes (Class 2—up to 750W)

EUROPE: Class 2 electric bikes, similar to Class 1 and Class 3, can use paths and trails for traditional bicycles. In the UK, all classes must ride on the left side of the lane.

UNITED STATES: Class 2 electric bikes face restrictions on certain trails, but these two-wheelers share bike and pedestrian paths with regular bicycles in Colorado and the majority of states.

👉 Electric Motorbikes (Class L1e-b—up to 4000W)

EUROPE: Class L1e-b electric bikes must use roads or motorized vehicle lanes (not cycle paths!) in most regions.

UNITED STATES: California prohibits the use of motorized bikes on specific routes, including bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, and equestrian trails. New York allows electric bikes with a speed of 20 mph (~32 km/h) to use the right lane and/or shoulder, while those with a higher top speed of 40 mph (~64 km/h) must stay in vehicle lanes.

2. What License Do You Need?

Low-powered electric bikes with pedal assistance don’t require a license, but age restrictions apply in some areas for safety reasons.

For higher-powered bikes, such as Class L1e-b, a valid driving or moped license is necessary. Learner riders must complete compulsory basic training (CBT) in certain regions to ride on public roads legally.

👉 Pedal-Assist Electric Bikes (Class 1 and Class 3—250-750W)

EUROPE: In the UK, anyone aged 14 or above can ride electric bikes without a license, whereas in Switzerland a category M driving license is required for those of the same age.

UNITED STATES: The majority of states don’t demand a driver’s license for low-speed bikes. Alaska is an exception, as it requires electric bike riders to have a Level M2 permit and be at least 14 years old.

👉 Throttle-Controlled Electric Bikes (Class 2—up to 750W)

EUROPE: A motorcycle license (class A or A1) is required for throttle-controlled electric bikes in Germany. Riders must be at least 14 years old.

UNITED STATES: Pennsylvania allows operating throttle-controlled electric bikes without a driver’s license. There’s no age limit for riding these bikes either.

👉 Electric Motorbikes (Class L1e-b—up to 4000W)

EUROPE: In the Netherlands, those who ride high-speed electric bikes must obtain a moped driving license. These bikes can also be operated with a car license in most other regions. People aged 16 and above in the UK can ride an L1e-B electric bike after completing a CBT course. But they’ll need a provisional license to take the course.

UNITED STATES: Some states, including Arkansas, prohibit individuals under 16 from riding motorized bikes. In states where it’s allowed (such as New Jersey), riders must carry a valid driver’s license to operate such vehicles. In New York, a Driver’s License +M is mandatory for bikes with a top speed of 40 mph (~64 km/h).

3. Is Insurance Mandatory?

Whether insurance is required depends on the type and specifications of the electric bike.

👉 Pedal-Assist Electric Bikes (Class 1 and Class 3—250-750W)

EUROPE: The European Court of Justice decided that electric bikes not propelled exclusively by mechanical power don’t need to be insured.

UNITED STATES: The majority of states, including Pennsylvania and Louisiana, don’t have any insurance requirements for pedal-assist electric bikes.

👉 Throttle-Controlled Electric Bikes (Class 2—up to 750W)

EUROPE: In most European countries, insurance isn’t needed for this class of electric bikes. But exceptions exist, such as in the Netherlands.

UNITED STATES: Electric bikes in Colorado, North Dakota, and the majority of states aren’t subject to the insurance regulations imposed on regular motor vehicles.

👉 Electric Motorbikes (Class L1e-b—up to 4000W)

EUROPE: Electric motorbikes classified as L1e-B must have insurance.

UNITED STATES: Motor-driven cycles are required to have insurance.

4. Are You Required to Wear Protective Gear?

Wearing a helmet is always recommended and even mandatory when riding a two-wheeler of L1e-b category. For extra safety, riders should also wear protective gear such as gloves, eye goggles, and appropriate footwear, though these are not usually required by law.

👉 Pedal-Assist Electric Bikes (Class 1 and Class 3—250-750W)

EUROPE: In France, as in many parts of Europe, wearing a helmet for low-speed electric bikes is not required, but it’s strongly advised in order to reduce the risk of potential injuries. There’s a special rule: wearing a helmet is a must for infants and children below 12 years old.

UNITED STATES: New York encourages helmet use among all riders and makes it mandatory for those aged 16-17, while Kentucky requires helmets for those under 21 years old.

👉 Throttle-Controlled Electric Bikes (Class 2—up to 750W)

EUROPE: Helmets are required for throttle-controlled bike riders in Germany.

UNITED STATES: Connecticut mandates helmets for all classes of electric bike riders.

👉 Electric Motorbikes (Class L1e-b—up to 4000W)

EUROPE: In Europe, L1e-B riders must wear protective headgear meeting motorcycle helmet standards.

UNITED STATES: North Dakota forbids individuals under 18 from riding electric bikes up to 28 mph (45 km/h) without wearing a helmet. Tennessee and New Jersey mandate helmet use for all riders, irrespective of age; helmets must conform to federal standards.

5. Can You Legally Carry a Passenger?

Electric bikes designed as two-seaters are allowed to carry passengers in both EUROPE and the UNITED STATES. But remember: passengers must have their own seat; a pillon is not allowed on single-rider bikes.

Connecticut lets anyone under the age of 16 ride as a passenger on motorized electric bikes, as long as the vehicle has been fitted with the proper equipment for passenger transport. Passenger-friendly two-wheelers, like the Colibri M22, are equipped with handholds and footrests for pillons. These features are mandatory for motorbike type approval in Europe.

No specific age restriction exists for passengers, in general. Yet in West Virginia, those under 15 must ride with someone 18 or older.

Plus, safety headgear is not optional. As an example, South Dakota requires all passengers, regardless of age, to wear a helmet.

6. What Are the Penalties for Riding an Electric Bike Illegally?

Anyone violating electric bike regulations, such as evading licensing and registration, riding in the wrong lane, or tampering with speed limiters, will be fined. Those riding under the influence are subject to more serious penalties like hefty fines, suspension of driver’s license, and potential imprisonment—depending on local laws. In Gibraltar, a rider exceeding the alcohol limit was fined £400 and lost driving privileges for six months.

EUROPE: Not following German electric bike regulations will lead to fines or the confiscation of the vehicle. Breaking UK regulations can result in bike impoundment and a fixed penalty (6 penalty points and a £300 fine).

UNITED STATES: Riders in New Jersey who use motor-driven (not pedal-assist!) bikes on public roads without a driver’s license, registration, and insurance can face fines of up to $50. If someone under the age of 14 operates a motorized bike on the streets of Tennessee, they’ll be fined for committing a delinquent act.

Conclusion

Electric bikes can be legally used on public roads, but certain conditions must be met (e.g. max power output, top speed limits, or registration).

Regulations vary across countries, states, and municipalities—and they can change at any time.

So remember to stay up to date on the electric bike laws in your area and ride a street-legal two-wheeler, such as the Colibri M22. 😁
